Samarium is used as alloy in making permanent magnets. It is used in making samarium-cobalt permanent magnets which have high resistance to demagnetization. It is also used as a neutron absorber in nuclear reactors. It is used in the core of carbon arc lights with other metals which are used in studio lighting and projector lights.
